Our question is what are the aims of sponsorship. Two years ago I asked doctor Dave M. what a sponsor should do. He answered that a sponsor should only help his sponsee through the steps. That's all.
That seems simple enough and is certainly a good beginning. Now, we are not in charge of careers, love-life, depression, hunger or housing. But obviously cases may differ and no set rules are being proposed. We are just airing the questions which will arise when one person requests another to help them progress through the steps.
If you were going on an expedition wouldn't you rather have a guide who knew the terrain, the language and the dangers of the journey? and wouldn't you want to trust that guide?
Most alcoholics are pretty proud of their uniqueness and it doesn't really matter how low our self-esteem has dipped we still think we know what we are doing, and we can do it by ourselves. But wasn't it our thinking that got us into those paper nightgowns? those orange or blue ensembles we wore to court?
The measure of sincerely wishing to be willing to go to any lengths to stay sober is surrendering 'my way'. Lacking discipline, sanity, clarity, confidence and power, we can't do any worse than practicing obedience to the will of an other(separated intentionally). Temporarily that other is your sponsor. He's not your father, he's your only friend. Be honest. Be open and drop the cunning disguises for your own sake.
Work the steps like they are the riddle of the sphinx. Ask questions and put the answers into action. Tell your sponsor everything. We're only as sick as our secrets. Also, "There's only one thing sicker than a newcomer and that's a newcomer's 'higher power'." Anonymous quote

Two WolveTTs
|
- One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes
on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between 2 wolves."
One is Evil. It is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance,
self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility,
kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
